How to Start Your Spiritual Awakening Journey

How to Start Your Spiritual Awakening Journey

Everyone is on a spiritual journey but not everyone is aware of it.  At the end of the day, most of us are looking for one thing when we begin a spiritual journey and that is wholeness.  We all long for completion. So in this post, we are going to talk about how to start your spiritual awakening journey to completion.

Like most people, you may have probably felt like no matter how much you gave and helped others you still felt like something was missing.  You may have bounced from relationship to relationship longing for a sense of completion or trying to fill a void that seemed unfillable.

Some of us are former workaholics trying to recover from the debilitating anxiety that careers and financial goals require of us.  In my experience, I would work almost 60 hours a week and never enjoy the fruits of my labor.  Once we complete one thing, we immediately begin thinking about the next thing.

Alan Watts often mentioned in his lectures how we are trained from school age that we had to perform well in order to get into college.  When we get to college we have to perform well so that we can have a successful career.  Then after getting a successful career we think about getting a house and starting a family.  Finally in retirement we mourn all the beautiful opportunities that we missed when we were younger.  We can then no longer enjoy the fruits of our labor because we are too old and tired.

The Transformative Shift of an Awakening Journey

Experiencing an awakening is almost like culture shock.  Everything and everyone around you now seems different and you feel even more out of place.  You may tend to think differently than most people and as a result, friendships begin to slowly fade away.

This can lead to times of loneliness and the sense of feeling lost during this transition period.  During this stage of transition we are challenged to follow the path laid for us but we first need a light to see the direction.  So, in this post, I want to share some things that have helped me along my journey in hopes that it will be helpful for you.

The following tips are more like baby steps or drinking baby milk until you are fully grown and able to eat tough meat.  It can also be seen as a merging lane onto a fast highway.  The way to find direction is you have to get moving and set it in motion or move along with the motion.  Get into the flow of the Dao or The Way.  We won’t understand the path or understand where it is going until we start traveling on it.

Tips for Starting Your Spiritual Awakening Journey

Live in the moment

If you were raised in western culture, most likely your mind was probably trained to always focus on future gain instead of living in the moment.  Living in the moment is one of the most liberating experiences to have and what we all seek.

The thrill of living the fast life quickly fades and we all seek rest.  This is why so many of us are always looking towards and waiting for a vacation from work.  Then once you get on vacation, it goes by quickly as your mind is too preoccupied with thinking about work that you don’t actually enjoy the short time off that you have.  Then we grudgingly force ourselves to go back to work the following week.

Our mind is constantly bombarded with automated thoughts and interpretations which most of the time we don’t recognize because we are so controlled by them.  However, if we can “celebrate the way life is” as the Daoist scriptures says, then we can begin to feel a shift in “reality.”  When we can pause to take a time out of the repetitiveness of daily living then we are able to feel as though we are standing in the middle of a whirlpool.

Do what you love

Many times we feel a sense of incompleteness throughout the course of our life.  It is a sense of discontentment.  Partly, it could be due to our trained minds to always aspire for the next shiniest object instead of being content and enjoying what we do have.

However, this is also felt because the talent and gifts are not being actively used or engaged.  For example, someone that has a talent and gift in painting typically hates very mundane office jobs or waitressing.  In fact, many people are depressed when stuck in a career that they are unable to truly exercise their gifts.

It is important that we actively use the gifts and talents that the universe has blessed us with.  These gifts are instilled into our spirit for us to enjoy.

Those gifts don’t always have to be creative but also in general psychic.  An example of a psychic gift includes empathy.  Coaching and giving advice are gifts.

Surprisingly, starting your spiritual journey you may begin to feel that you don’t enjoy or love the things that you used to.  This tends to only add to the feeling of being lost.  It can feel devastating to feel that nothing brings you pleasure or enjoyment anymore.

However, I recommend that you go with this horrible feeling.  Explore it.  Maybe you just need to spend a weekend not doing anything and let the universe guide you to something that you love.

Let Your Curiosity Lead You

As your soul searches for wholeness there are questions that will pop in your mind.  These questions are clues that will lead you to the Self.

I believe that spiritual scriptures are very beneficial to our evolution but be careful not to fall into a close mindset that organized tends to bring.  If you take a high end approach you will begin to see how amazingly similar scriptures across all beliefs are.  Ancient peoples separated by thousands of miles still had the same similar concepts and beliefs handed down through the collective unconscious.

Many ancient Gods like the Mesopotamian deity Tammuz, represented a god that resurrected to redeem the people of Earth and bring us back into our divine standing with the universe.  This of course is glaringly similar to the belief in Christianity.  As a matter of fact, many ancient beliefs celebrated the birth of their god on December 25th every year.

A common theme is the belief that man had fallen from his divine state and now lived on a journey to discover The Self.  However, there is no right and wrong when it comes to your own personal beliefs in the universe.  All opinions are based on a perception inherited by society or the masses.  The way to find the truth is to find The Self you Inner Truth.

Find Your Healing

Most of us who come to what we consider an awakening are brought to the point through pain.  Pain and suffering is something that leads us into the path of Self discovery aka soul searching.  It is important that the wounds from our experiences are healed in order for us to proceed.

Doing shadow work is a great way to find our self and heal along the way.  Shadow work encourages you to consider past experiences that may have had a huge influence on your life.  Those experiences may have led you to repress the memories and even repress certain characteristics of your personality out of fear.  What we fear is our Shadow.

Shadow work helps us to accept these unconscious elements and integrate the positive attributes that can be gleaned from them.

There are some other great ways that you can find healing as well.  Meditation and sound therapy is one of those.  I personally love using Tibetan singing bowls because the vibrations from the frequencies emitted are super refreshing and I feel healing in my soul.

Ultimately, healing will be found only through Self love.  Many people like to recite words of affirmation.  Hug and caress yourself and feel the healing energies from your hands vibrate through your body.  Practice aromatherapy or tantra exercises. Ultimately do what refreshes your soul.

Use Meditation As Medicine and Not a Diet

Meditation is an essential when beginning your spiritual awakening journey.  However, meditation used with the wrong intention can decrease the benefits received.

Meditation shouldn’t be done as a chore or something that you “need” to do.  Meditation should be done out of the love of doing.  It should be done with the intent of loving the moment and Eternal Now.

There are many meditation methods and you have to find the one that works for you.  Some methods include meditating on your breath, a certain object or particular thought.  Some meditate with their eyes open or some even practice activities like drawing or painting as a form.

It is important to not use meditation as an attempt to control your thoughts of the mind.  Controlling your thoughts is impossible.  You may have realized this if you have ever tried to repress intrusive or constant thoughts.  The more that you try to stop those thoughts the more active they become.

Some call this the monkey mind.  Instead, let the mind wander as you observe the thoughts that come and go without interacting with them.  Don’t set any intention.  Don’t fight the thoughts that come into your mind.

Many times, when you just observe those thoughts it can lead into active imagination.  It could be that the subconscious is trying to communicate with you during meditation.  Don’t forbid these messages of what is coming to your awareness.

The Purpose of Meditation

MOST IMPORTANTLY, there is no right and wrong way of meditating.  Be careful listening to others preach about how they meditate.  Eventually you will try to use their instructions during your own meditation times only to come to no avail. You will become entangled with the thoughts of the mind and identify with them. You are not your thoughts. Thinking is only a function of the mind.

The goal of meditation is to BE instead of DO.  You don’t control your thoughts as they are as automatic as the beating of the heart.  There are many wonderful experiences that you may have such as what the Hindu call Nirvana.  It’s a moment where your mind is empty and no thoughts are happening.  You are just being.

The goal of meditation is to BE instead of DO.

Get to Know Your Self

Your spiritual awakening journey can really be called more of a soul searching journey.  Throughout moments in life you may have felt the need to know yourself.  The Universe uses symbolism and synchronicities to communicate secrets and endow us with enlightenment.

By getting a birth chart done and analyzed, you can get a mind blowing realization of yourself.  Your essence is represented by the placement of the Sun, your emotions and general mood in the Moon, your personality through your ascendant and disowned/Shadow self through the descendant.

Along with a birth chart, it is also helpful to get an annual solar return and progression readings.  These readings will give you an idea of how your personality has changed and the events that are happening in your life.

Tarot card readings could also be combined with your birth chart to give you a more complete picture.  Tarot card readings like Past, Present and Future spreads can be very illuminating.  These different tools help you to put the puzzle pieces of yourself together.
